Week of the Arctic
ACEP research engineer Jeremy Vandermeer travelled to Kotzebue, Alaska, last week to discuss renewable-diesel power systems at a three-day economic development summit focused on responsible mining in the Arctic region. The Mineral Development in the Arctic summit was part of the Institute of the North's Week of the Arctic.
Vandermeer presented in the session titled, “Built and Supportive Infrastructure: Transportation, Energy and Telecommunications.” His presentation, titled “Integrating Renewable Energy into Remote Power Systems,” gave an overview of islanded microgrids, and challenges and opportunities associated with integrating the renewables. He also gave a few examples, including Kotzebue and the Raglan Mine in Northern Quebec.
