Utility Intern to Assist Project Engineer for Prince of Wales Island
University of Alaska Anchorage mechanical engineering graduate David Chamberlain will spend this summer embedded as a student intern with through ACEP’s workforce development utility internship program.
AP&T serves most of Prince of Wales Island’s communities, including Coffman Cove, Craig, Hollis, Hydaburg, Kasaan, Klawock, Naukati, Thorne Bay and Whale Pass.
All but Whale Pass are interconnected and receive hydropower from Black Bear Lake and South Fork. In partnership with Haida Corp., AP&T is currently completing construction of the Hiilangaay Hydro project, a 5-megawatt hydroelectric resource approximately 10 miles east of Hydaburg.
As part of his internship, Chamberlain will attend site operations at various power facilities on the island, including existing stations and stations in construction. He will act as an assistant to the project engineer, and his tasks may include organizing documents, verifying engineer’s calculations, directing or assisting with hands-on work and machinery, and verifying or documenting work completed.
Ten utilities across Alaska are participating in the ACEP utility internship program funded by the Office of Naval Research. Student interns are paired with a mentor from ACEP, who will consult with them and their host utility throughout the internship period.
