The Women, Gender & Sexuality Studies (WGSS) Program at UAF invites you to its monthly
meeting on Wednesday, December 4, 2024, from 1:00 PM to 2:15 PM in GRUE 503H. This
free and engaging event is an opportunity to connect, learn, and explore groundbreaking

The highlight of this month’s meeting is a presentation by Dr. Tori McDermott, an Assistant Professor in the UAF Department of Communication and an accomplished researcher specializing in public relations and strategic communication. Her talk, titled "How Gendered Power is Communicated: An Overview of Critical Research and Research Methods in Communication," will delve into the intricate ways power dynamics manifest in traditionally masculine environments such as the military, academia, and social media platforms like TikTok.
Dr. McDermott’s expertise is grounded in a rich academic and professional background. With a Ph.D. from the University of Maryland, she has contributed extensively to the field of communication through her research, teaching, and published works. She is the editor of four volumes, including the forthcoming True Crime and Communication: Exploring Necropolitics in the Rise of True Crime Media. Her work appears in prominent journals such as the Journal of Communication Pedagogy, Public Relations Review, and Women & Language.
During her presentation, Dr. McDermott will not only share insights from her recent research projects but also provide an overview of her experiences with the research and publishing process in communication studies.
