Indigenous Media Teaching Demo with Allan Hayton

UAF Department of Theatre and Film welcomes the community to meet ALLAN HAYTON, a finalist candidate for the tenure-track position in Indigenous Media in the College of Liberal Arts. This public teaching demonstration will be held this week on THURSDAY FEBRUARY 13 from 1-2PM in the Salisbury Lab Theatre. The meeting will be both in-person and online.
Allan Hayton is a passionate advocate for Indigenous storytelling, using film and theatre as powerful mediums to revitalize Native languages and cultures. His work emphasizes the importance of Indigenous representation, ensuring that Native voices tell their own stories with authenticity and depth. Hayton’s productions, such as The Boy in the Moon, a Gwich’in language play, and Tugidaam Sistraa: Moon’s Sister, a radio play for the Pribilof Islands, highlight his dedication to preserving and promoting Indigenous languages through performance. His belief that theatre can be a tool for healing and cultural resurgence is evident in his work with youth and community theatre programs across Alaska.
Beyond the stage, Hayton has engaged with film and television to bring Indigenous narratives to broader audiences. His role in Seeing Daylight and his involvement in Shakespeare adaptations, including a Tlingit Macbeth, reflect his ability to blend traditional and contemporary storytelling. As a performer, playwright, and educator, he has worked with Perseverance Theatre, Naa Kahidi Theatre, and the Alaska Native Heritage Center, among others, to elevate Indigenous artistry. Through his leadership in education and community engagement, Hayton continues to inspire the next generation of Native storytellers, fostering spaces where Indigenous perspectives can thrive.
