Dr. Lawrence K. Duffy

Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry, Emeritus

WHEREAS Dr. Lawrence K. Duffy served the ÌÀÄ·ÊÓƵ with distinction in teaching, research and service from 1987 to 2023; and

WHEREAS Dr. Duffy distinguished himself by his excellence in teaching a wide range of courses, including for the Rural Alaska Honors Institute; and he supervised ten students to their doctorates and twenty-four to their master’s degrees; and he focused on mentoring students from underrepresented groups; and

WHEREAS Dr. Duffy and colleagues, early in his research career, found evidence pointing to the cause of Alzheimer’s disease; and he advanced the understanding of methyl mercury in the food chain; and he received UAF’s Usibelli Distinguished Research Award; and he published two hundred twenty-three papers; and

WHEREAS Dr. Duffy served in multiple leadership roles at the university, including as faculty senator, department chair, interim Graduate School dean and College of Natural Science and Mathematics associate dean; and he served the community through positions on the local mental health center and Alzheimer’s association boards and on the Fairbanks borough’s air pollution commission;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the ÌÀÄ·ÊÓƵ expresses its deep appreciation to Dr. Lawrence Duffy for his extensive contributions to the state of Alaska and to the university; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the ÌÀÄ·ÊÓƵ, in further recognition of the invaluable services rendered by Dr. Duffy and as evidence of the university’s desire that his identification with the university be maintained, hereby salutes the appointment of Dr. Lawrence K. Duffy as professor of biochemistry, emeritus; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this resolution be appropriately engrossed and signed by the chancellor of the ÌÀÄ·ÊÓƵ as further evidence of the esteem and respect in which he holds Dr. Lawrence K. Duffy, and conveyed to Dr. Duffy on this third day of May, 2024.
