Welcome to Week 5!

I hope you're doing great out there. This week, I'm excited to share my weekly newsletter with our Office of Rights, Compliance, and Accountability, aka, ORCA. Please allow me to introduce you to Kori, an ORCA student employee and the wonderful author of this week's newsletter. Enjoy!

I hope you’ve had a great first third of the semester! I’m Kori, a Peer Prevention Educator with ORCA, Prevention and Outreach Division (ORCA POD). My job is to help support you, the UAF community, by promoting a safe, healthy, and fun campus climate. As part of that, I work on preventing alcohol-related harms, preventing domestic violence and sexual assault, and promoting bystander intervention. You’ll find on campus running events such as the SoBear Lounges, supporting informational tabling or training(s), or just hanging out between classes. I’m super passionate about our work at ORCA and I’m so happy to be able to take over the newsletter to talk about it more! Thank you, Vice Chancellor Guthrie!

As you may know, Valentine’s Day is later this week, so I wanted to take some time to spotlight a way you can make the most out of your relationships: set expectations! This can include expectations about what you want a relationship to be – friends or partners, casual or committed, hook-ups, or long-term.Ìý But this also includes topics like the time you want to spend together, the frequency with which they should be messaging, calling, or visiting you, and the types of behaviors that are okay in certain situations. You should also not feel bad about wanting time alone for self-care, to do hobbies you enjoy, or to spend time with other people. This just means you might have more fun stories to tell later!

It’s important to talk about this early on in relationships, especially romantic or sexual ones, so everyone’s on the same page. Don’t fret if you’ve missed the bus on that one, though – better late than never! It can be intimidating to have these conversations, and it’s perfectly okay to write up or rehearse what you want to say beforehand. Finding your voice, while scary, will improve your relationships and the rest of your life! Having these conversations builds trust and makes relationships better, so have them as often as needed.

Don’t forget to respect the expectations of the people in your life, too!

If you’re at all concerned about your health or safety in a relationship, come talk to ORCA’s team! The team can help talk through some issues, refer you to resources, and potentially take action if needed. ORCA can be reached at uaf-orca@alaska.edu, 907-474-7300, or in person on the 3rd floor of Constitution Hall. You can also reach out to the counselors at Student Health and Counseling at 907-474-7043 or access free 24/7 mental health care at TimelyCare. If you are in a situation where you are concerned for your immediate safety, please call 9-1-1.
