Dead Writers

The Midnight Sun Visiting Writers Series hosts the Dead Writers reading during the Halloween season. Participants—including many of our MFA students and faculty—deliver readings from the work of their favorite deceased writers, often in full creepy costume. The event includes raffle prizes and awards such Best Costume and Best Performance. Dead Writers, which originated in 1990, raises additional funds to bring visiting writers to Fairbanks.

Cover charge for this event is $10 for UAF students with a student ID and $20 for all others. All of the proceeds go to the Midnight Sun Visiting Writers Series which brings up incredible authors and poets to our community.

Dead Writers 2023

The 32nd annual Dead Writers event brought literary spirits to life on Thursday, Oct. 26, 2023, at The Pub on the UAF campus. This beloved fundraiser for the Midnight Sun Visiting Writers Series invited students and community members to perform as their favorite departed authors, from Emily Dickinson to Yukio Mishima. Attendees enjoyed a spooky and spirited evening of dramatic readings, costumes, and creativity, all while supporting efforts to bring acclaimed writers to Fairbanks for workshops and readings. With its mix of literary homage and Halloween fun, Dead Writers continues to be a cherished tradition for UAF and the Fairbanks community.
