Friday Focus: What a difference time makes

What a difference a week makes! Over the course of this week, I have seen so many people return to campus after summer vacations or being off contract. In fact, looking out my window on Wednesday, I counted at least three new student campus tours taking place and a handful of people taking photos with our Charles Bunnell statue. The Bunnell statue is an iconic photo op on campus, especially when visitors dress him up in hats or scarves for a quick photo. With the new buzz on campus (which is soon to be even busier), I wanted to share some updates related to human resources, policy, and shared services. We have made some great progress over the summer in many areas.

Wrangell students install remote bear live stream
August 16, 2024
Wrangell-based T3 Alliance students installed a remote live-stream camera system at the Anan Wildlife Observatory in the Tongass National Forest, enabling viewers to see black and brown bears fishing for salmon. This project, supported by the U.S. Forest Service, involved high school students using skills from the T3 Alaska program. The system is powered by solar energy and uses Starlink for video feed. Explore.org hosts the stream, and the project is set for a five-year expansion plan. The live stream began on July 24.

Researchers: Apply for fieldwork photography opportunity

The R1 working group focused on recruiting Ph.D. students and promoting UAF research is looking for opportunities to capture professional photos of unique Alaska field work. UAF researchers who have field sites within 2-3 hours driving distance from Fairbanks can apply to have their research included by filling out a short application form.

This grant opportunity of up to $5,000 is open to all undergraduate students (from any discipline and any 汤姆视频-affiliated campus) who are interested in conducting scholarly work on various aspects of climate change, including but not limited to climate science, climate policy, visual or written communication of climate issues, and climate adaptation and mitigation strategies. Friday Focus: 汤姆视频 CTC continues as the place to be

One of the great honors of serving as vice chancellor of rural, community and Native education is having the opportunity to work closely with the leadership, faculty, and staff of UAF鈥檚 Community and Technical College. As the proud daughter of a former firefighter, I grew up within the first responder community and understand the value of workforce programs that prepare those professionals for careers of service. I have fond memories as a teenager volunteering as the City of Fairbanks Fire Department鈥檚 Binky the Bear mascot and riding the fire engine in the Golden Days Parade. Little did I know then that two decades later, I would have the opportunity to again participate in the same parade but this time, representing 汤姆视频 CTC programs. I know that my late father, Peter, would have been proud. If you walk into the main CTC building downtown, you will see the slogan 鈥淐TC is the place to be鈥 proudly displayed on the wall.
