Student loan repayment restart

The three-year pause on federal student loan repayment will end in September 2023. Millions of borrowers nationwide will have a student loan payment due in October. The UAF Financial Aid Office is available to assist borrowers in gathering information they may need to contact their loan servicer for assistance.

As a university, we have been running lean for years due to budget reductions, COVID-19, and a change in the national employment market. Some areas have been so thin that losing one staff member leads to critical functions going undone. Over the last several years, we have also seen this compounded due to retirements that cause a loss of institutional knowledge. We rely heavily on those around us to train and pass on historical knowledge. During lean times, such as the past few years, it has been apparent that there is a need for strategic training to maintain and pass on important university knowledge.

Aug. 9, 2023 update: The road closure was delayed by smoke on Aug. 7 and the thunderstorm Aug. 8. Taku and North Tanana will be closed today thru Thursday night and possibly into Friday, Aug. 11. Portions of North Tanana Drive and Taku Drive will be closed from Aug. 7 at 7 a.m. through Aug. 9 at 6 p.m. to make road repairs. Detours will be posted to guide vehicles around the closure.

Friday Focus: Thoughts on beyond line of sight

For those of us dancing in school gyms in the early 1980s, Love is in the Air is a familiar tune. As American Bandstand would say - nice rhythm, easy to dance to. For those of us at UAF in 2023, we could morph that into Drones are in the Air, maybe do a remix to zhuzh it up. This new song, though, will not be a one-hit wonder if Cathy Cahill and the ACUASI band have anything to say about it! ACUASI has been around for over 20 years but for the last few years has really taken off (pun intended) with the growing interest in the state of Alaska in developing a drone economy. This is a heavy lift, but the team is all in. And, with the additional funding for economic development from the Governor, tremendous progress has been made.

Friday Focus: Combining efforts

For the past six months, both the Department of Equity and Compliance and the Center for Student Rights and Responsibilities have been working in the same space and under a shared director. This combination was a temporary measure to maintain campus commitment to safety, compliance, and care while recruiting for a new Equity and Compliance Director. However, working together has allowed our offices to find efficiencies as well as opportunities to enhance services provided to the university community. It quickly became clear there would be a benefit to permanently integrating our efforts and expertise.

After more than four decades of service to the university, Dean Stalder will retire on Aug. 1. All faculty and staff are invited to a retirement celebration on Thursday, July 27, from 4-6 p.m.

Dr. Cheryl Rosa rejoins UAF as attending veterinarian and director of Animal Resource Center

Dr. Cheryl Rosa joined the ÌÀÄ·ÊÓƵ on the Troth Yeddha' Campus in her new role as attending veterinarian on July 17. She most recently served as the deputy director of the U.S. Arctic Research Commission in Anchorage where she worked to strengthen Arctic research and the federal government's ties to the State of Alaska, Arctic Indigenous groups and international partners.

Friday Focus: The Carnegie Classification®

The Carnegie Classification® is the nation's leading framework for classifying the diverse U.S. institutions of higher education into broadly similar groups based on nationally reported and publicly available institutional data. This classification that was first published in the early 70s is now updated every three years. So far, Carnegie offers one basic classification system that is universally applied to nearly 4,000 U.S. colleges and universities. Based on our 2020 Institutional data, UAF is classified as a Doctoral University with High Research Activity (R2). Close examination of the data reveals that UAF is on the very high end of the R2 class, and with some change in our institutional profile, we can be classified as a Doctoral University with Very High Research (R1).

Fishery researchers, engineering students work to build better eDNA collectors

Last month, Jessica Glass and two students departed for the Kenai Peninsula toting a tub full of items that looked like plastic children's toys. Their plan for the six-day trip: Dunk them in Kasitsna Bay and see what happens. It may sound like a quirky week at the beach, but Glass, an assistant professor at UAF's College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences, hopes their project will lead to a breakthrough in environmental DNA sampling.

Uher, Plumb to serve as interim deans

Vice Chancellor for Rural, Community and Native Education Charlene Stern has announced that Bryan Uher will serve as interim dean of the ÌÀÄ·ÊÓƵ Community and Technical College starting on Aug. 2. Uher, who is currently CRCD's dean, will replace CTC Dean Michele Stalder, who is retiring.
