Fall reading lists have been announced by the Indigenous Authors and Innovations in Learning book clubs. The UAF Faculty Accelerator will purchase digital or physical books for club members.

Month of Writing events planned for October

Writers from the UAF community are invited to register for a Month of Writing, which will include weekly writing sessions and workshops. In addition to accountability for maintaining a regular writing practice, participants can expect to develop new skills for navigating academic, technical, and creative writing as well as techniques for productivity and wellness in our writing practices.

Caught in a major storm, UAF researchers make the best of it

On St. Paul Island, in the Bering Sea about 300 miles from Alaska’s coast, the still-powerful remains of Typhoon Merbok passed overhead, churning up the ocean and rolling across the landscape on a path to the Alaska mainland. As the storm hit the small island, three ÌÀÄ·ÊÓƵ researchers, two graduate students and a filmmaker went out for a look.

FY24 appropriations request submission form

We have begun to plan for the FY24 federal funding appropriations request. UAF is requiring that all individuals interested in submitting an appropriations request to the Congressional delegation complete an initial request through the linked Google form.

$1,000 grants available to student groups

Student groups and campus organizations can apply for a grant of up to $1,000 from the UAF Alumni Association. The funds will support projects that identify specific needs and improve campus opportunities for current students.

Convocation scavenger hunt details

The details for the scavenger hunt are here! The game will open at 10 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 19 and will close on Monday, Sept. 26 at 5 p.m. To be eligible for the prizes all missions in the scavenger hunt have to be completed, and the participant has to be present at Convocation to win.

Nanooks Hockey opens preseason with Blue and Gold games

The ÌÀÄ·ÊÓƵ Nanooks hockey team is kicking off its preseason on Sept. 16 and 17 with the annual Blue/Gold Scrimmage games. This year, the festivities will return to the Patty Ice Arena on the UAF Troth Yeddha' campus.

It is awesome to have our Troth Yeddha' campus vibrant with students once again. It is energizing to walk around and see students dining in the Wood Center, walking across Constitution Park between classes, and taking the hike up to or down from MBS. I hear faculty and staff still remarking on this daily and we are three weeks into the semester. The positive energy doesn't seem to be wearing off; it continues to be contagious and rejuvenating!

Kristin O'Brien, professor in the Institute of Arctic Biology and Department of Biology and Wildlife, has been invited to serve on the Advisory Committee (AC) for Polar Programs at the NSF. The next meeting of the AC will be held virtually via Zoom on Sept. 15-16 from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m., and polar researchers are welcome and encouraged to attend but will need to register in advance.
